Road Salts / De‑Icing Agents

Road salt and de-icing agents are comprised of the chloride salts of sodium, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. While utilized on roadways to make winter driving safer, these melting agents can compromise the integrity of your vehicle’s unprotected painted surfaces. Large amounts of free-floating ions found in sodium chloride can accelerate damage to a vehicle’s untreated paint, while molecules found in calcium chloride and magnesium chloride can distribute more ions upon dissolving, thus causing further deterioration. As a result, the salt derived acid can slowly break down a vehicle’s clearcoat, causing it to fade, discolor, and eventually fail.
